An e-challan (also written as e challan or online challan) is the electronic version of a traditional traffic challan issued when a driver violates a traffic rule. Instead of a paper slip, the challan is generated digitally by the traffic police or RTO system and linked directly to the vehicle’s registration number through the Vahan database.
The e-challan stores details of the offence, fine amount, and other relevant information in an online database. This enables vehicle owners to conveniently check, track, and pay challans from any location. The system improves transparency, reduces paperwork, and speeds up the processing of traffic fines across India.
In India, the process generally works like this:
A violation (for example overspeeding, jumping a red light, driving without a helmet or without valid documents) is detected via CCTV, ANPR camera, or by a traffic officer.
The vehicle registration number is matched via the VAHAN or RTO portal to identify the owner.
The system issues the rto challan or vahan challan in electronic form, i.e., your e-challan gets listed under your vehicle record.
You can then check challan online or perform an online challan check to view your status.

If your system response says “No challan found”, it means no active online challan check entry exists for that vehicle number. Note the following.
Make sure you entered the correct state code (for example “DL” for Delhi) and correct vehicle number. These mistakes often lead to “No challan found.”
If you received the traffic challan in a state other than where your vehicle is registered, it may show up only under that state’s site. Use the “Check E-Challan by State” section below.
Once you identify a pending e challan, you can proceed with echallan payment or online challan payment as described below.
Download the ACKO app on your mobile phone
Follow the same steps used for checking your challans.
Review pending challans and proceed with secure payment instantly.
Visit the state portal or Parivahan site, enter your registration number, view the e-challan or fine, then make the challan payment online via the “Pay Now” button.
Visit the official Parivahan portal or your State Transport Department’s website. Enter your vehicle registration number, view pending e-challan details or fines, and click the ‘Pay Now’ button to complete the online challan payment.

Depending on state regulations, repeat traffic offenders may face higher penalties, licence suspension, or even vehicle RC cancellation. To avoid legal complications, it’s important to check your e-challan status regularly and clear pending challans on time.
If you ignore your online challan or pending traffic challan, you risk licence suspension, vehicle RC renewal denial, or court summons.
Pending vehicle challans often block insurance claims, resale, or transfer of ownership. Clearing your e challan keeps your record clean.
By performing a challan check online regularly and paying your echallan payment quickly, you avoid late fees, legal trouble, and maintain full compliance.
Always wear a helmet (for bikes) and seatbelt (for cars).
Never use your mobile phone while driving.
Obey speed limits and traffic signals.
Park only in designated zones.
Keep your Driving Licence (DL), Registration Certificate (RC), Insurance, and Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate valid. Failure can lead to a challan.
Visit the ACKO app or website or go via your state transport portal. Do a challan check, identify your fine, and complete e challan payment via card/UPI/net-banking.
Use your vehicle registration number on ACKO or Parivahan site to perform an e-challan check by vehicle number and view your challan status.
Enter your bike’s registration number in the online challan check page; two-wheelers also use the same system for traffic challan.
In rare cases, if your traffic challan is forwarded to court, follow the directions provided on the challan notice. Most challans, however, can be settled easily through online payment portals like ACKO or Parivahan.
A challan is a formal notice or fine issued by the traffic authority for rule violations. An e challan is the digital version.
Non-payment may lead to higher fines, licence suspension, denial of RC renewal, or court summons.
